  While the planet never felt the total darkness of night, the small moon did thanks to the shadow of the planet. The moon was covered by water except for a few lush areas above sea level.   “We’ll be landing soon,” he said.

  “Will we take the shuttle like we did between Baade and the Spaceport?” she asked, walking forward and sliding onto the seat next to him.

  “Yes. We’ll land on the planet, but take the shuttle to the moon. Where we are going, there is not enough space to land a ship of this size,” he explained.

  She watched as he checked a series of screens. “It still amazes me that you can fly this ship by yourself. Granted, the technology is out of this world and it isn’t like there is a lot of traffic to worry about, but still, it’s a pretty complex piece of machinery to know how to fix if something goes wrong with it,” she reflected.

  He shook his head. “Most of the ship’s systems have duplicate backups in case of failure. I enjoyed working on ships from an early age. I used to slip out of the palace to go to the space docks. Mother and Father finally gave up trying to keep track of me and gave me a shuttle of my own when I was barely ten cycles old,” he explained.

  “Sweet! Did you know how to fly it?” she asked.

  He laughed. “No. It wouldn’t have mattered if I had known anyway. The shuttle was a discarded piece of wreckage.   She sighed. “I don’t even have my driver’s license ‘cause it never made much sense to get one. I didn’t own a car. Even if I did, it wouldn’t have mattered anyway. I wouldn’t want to drive in Houston or D.C. traffic. There’s never any place to park, people drive crazy, and you can usually get to where you want to go faster by walking. Now, if there had been shuttles like you guys have, that would have been different. The scooter was fun to drive.” She groaned. “The scooter! Dang it, I forgot all about it. It’s still at Dolinski’s place,” she grumbled with a shake of her head. “I hope Cosmos gets it back. I guess if he doesn’t, he can always deduct it from my salary. It’s not like I’ll be back for my paycheck anytime soon.”

  “I’m sure Cosmos will understand. RITA would have notified him that you were on Baade. As for flying, I was nervous the first time I flew the shuttle. After all, I was the one who’d rebuilt it,” he admitted with a chuckle.

  “What was it like?” she asked.

  He smiled as he remembered his first flight. He had been surprised when Mak showed up instead of his father. He learned later that J’kar, Borj, and Mak had conspired to keep him from having to go through the same thing they had—side-seat driving.

  “My brothers decided that I should be spared the trial by fire. Father is an exceptionally skilled pilot. To the west of the city, there is a region in the desert with a vast maze of deep canyons. It is not unusual for warriors to train there. Mak volunteered to take me. I thought I was smart. I memorized the canyon layout. By the time we arrived, I was confident that I could handle any challenge,” he boasted.

  She raised an eyebrow and looked at him with a skeptical expression. “And how did that go?” she asked.

  He shot her a wry grin. “I crashed on the first turn,” he chuckled.

  She giggled and shook her head. “At least you made it to the canyon,” she said.

  “That’s what Mak said,” Derik replied.

  “It must have been a nice way to grow up,” she murmured.

  “It was,” he agreed.

  His heart ached for her. He could sense her joy for him; yet, there was a feeling of sadness as well. In his mind, he could see images of her alone, staring at the reflection of herself in the computer screen. A new face blended with hers—the reflection of a tall, lanky man with an expression of avarice on his face.

  “He can no longer hurt you, Amelia,” he quietly said.

  She looked at him with a surprised expression before she shrugged. “I know. How long before we reach the planet?” she asked.

  “At least an hour,” he replied.

  She nodded. “I’m going to get something to drink. Do you want anything?” she asked as she stood up.

  “Only you, Amelia,” he quipped.

  She rolled her eyes. “Like I didn’t already know that,” she playfully retorted. Bending toward him, she kissed him. “And my name is Runt.”

  Stepping into the galley, she walked over to the replicator. She started to request a drink when she noticed there was something already inside it. Frowning, she opened the replicator and pulled out the tray of food. It was still warm.

  “Weird,” she muttered.

  She shrugged. Derik must have requested the meal and forgotten about it. She lifted the tray to her nose and sniffed. The food smelled pretty good.

  “His loss,” she chuckled.

  She requested a hot chocolate—with whipped cream. While the replicator hummed, she picked at the food on the tray. After a few bites, she realized that she was famished. Retrieving a utensil, she collected the cup of hot chocolate and picked up the tray of food.

  Placing her items on the table, she picked up her spork and began to eat. Her thoughts immediately strayed to the night before. She remembered the feel of his arms around her, his hands gliding over her skin, her lips sliding over his….
